Start-Up Statistics June 2012

June figures show further boost to North Somerset business start-ups and employment prospects.

The month of June saw six new businesses begin trading in North Somerset with help from our business advisory team, taking the total number of businesses who have benefitted from start-up advice and support from us to 126 across the last 12 months.

As always, in June, there was a huge variety of enterprises that either began trading or received free advice from us  including from these business sectors:

  • catering
  • electrical
  • hairdressing
  • home maintenance
  • the motor trade
  • music teaching
  • personal training
  • plumbing
  • travel (including student exchange)

They will have all received support from either one-to-one advice sessions, business planning assistance, start-up business workshops or by simply being pointed in the right direction for information and contacts.

As a result of June’s activities, eight new jobs have been created in North Somerset, bringing the number of jobs created from new businesses supported by us in the last twelve months to 175.

In addition we are pleased to announce that of the seven new enterprises that launched back in June 2011, all are still trading after their first 12 months in business, whilst of the 12 businesses that started up in June three years ago, 12 are continuing to trade successfully into their fourth year. Here’s to their continued success!

June also saw us advise 58 growing businesses in North Somerset, including 13 through High Growth Start-up workshops, which are specifically designed for ambitious start-up businesses and entrepreneurs across the South West who are looking to achieve a turnover of between £500,000 and £1 million pounds or more in their first three years of trading.

Angela Hicks, our Chief Executive, is understandably delighted with the results.

Far from being frightened of or discouraged by the recession, we are seeing more would-be business owners confidently setting out on the path to success knowing they have everything in place to take their businesses forward.

There is a wealth of free and low-cost advice, support and training available in North Somerset – from ourselves, the local council and othersto help ensure that the right foundations are in place for businesses to survive and thrive. Local support and advice is also here for businesses who want to grow or who need help.  We urge anyone who is thinking about running their own North Somerset-based business as well as those who are already trading to take advantage of these services to ensure that they are one of the successes of the future.”
