Art in Mind

A craft fair business, which set up to run regular events offering individually-made alternatives to high street mass-produced products, has expanded within its first six months.

Art in Mind, which organises and runs craft fairs with tea rooms in and around North Somerset, is a business started by crafter Rebecca Clark from Weston-super-Mare.

As a regular attendee of craft fairs, Rebecca realised that she wanted a different type of event to those already out there.

So, after attending a three day Starting in Business course which she describes as “brilliant” and “very helpful” and with NSEA’s further support and guidance, Rebecca set out to deliver regular events at competitive prices in semi-rural areas, offering people the opportunity to buy hand-crafted products in a relaxed and enjoyable setting.

From taking over the running of two events in October 2015 and with the support of her husband and parents, Rebecca is now running monthly or bi-monthly events in seven different venues and is in the process of taking on a new retail shop.

She also has a business that offers her the freedom she needs to work around her children, whilst doing something that she loves.

Rebecca, formerly a family support worker, says careful targeting of audiences and successful promotion have stood the business in good stead.

“We try to appeal to local residents and holidaymakers alike and target them with posters, flyers to local homes and advertising in the local paper and on local radio.” Rebecca explains. “I have found organisation is the key to success!”

Rebecca admits that running a business is hard work. “It takes a lot of your time but you have to persevere with the belief that it will be worth it in the end!” she says.
“I am now working towards having a shop where crafters can rent shelves to display their goods permanently and it’s that vision that helps me to keep going when I’m tired or under pressure.”
